From Friday 16 July 2004, applications for all categories of UK visas - including UK Residence Permits - should be made at the new UK Visa Application Centre at Wisma MCA, Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.
The new services will make applying for a UK visa easier and more convenient, with four times longer opening hours and customers able to track the progress of their application online or by telephone.
The UK Visa Application Centre will be operated by Visa Facilitation Services (VFS), but all visa applications will continue to be assessed by visa officers at the British High Commission.

Initially, applications submitted through the UK Visa Application Centre will continue to be processed within two working days (for UK Residence Permits) or five working days (for other visa applications). But the new processing services should enable us to reduce these times soon. If an interview and/or further documentation are required, these service times will not apply.

These changes are in direct response to increased demand and customer feedback, and are part of the British High Commission's continued commitment to make UK visa services more efficient and customer-friendly.
1. The Acting High Commissioner, Mark Canning, will give a press conference at 1030 hours on Thursday 15 July 2004, at which he will formally open the new UK Visa Application Centre. You are cordially invited to send a journalist/cameraman to cover the event. Please could you confirm your attendance to Abdul Rashid Hussein, Senior Press Officer at the British High Commission, Tel (03) 2170 2220.
2. The UK Visa Application Centre will be located at:
Suite 19-05
19th Floor
Wisma MCA
163 Jalan Ampang
50450 Kuala Lumpur
Tel: (03) 2164 9323
3. The UK Visa Application Centre will be operated by Visa Facilitation Services (VFS), an experienced company offering visa support services to British and other diplomatic and consular missions in India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, the UAE and Bangladesh. Trained VFS staff will:
  • provide guidance and advice where necessary;
  • accept applications;
  • forward applications to the British High Commission;
  • arrange an interview if necessary;
  • return the passport to the customer at the end of the process.
A service charge of RM35 will be levied per application. An additional service will be offered for customers who wish to have passports returned to their office or home address by courier.
4. The benefits of the new services include:
  • four times longer public opening hours, from the current 8 hours per week at the High Commission to 35 hours per week at the UK Visa Application Centre, meaning more convenience for the customer;
  • no more queueing outside the High Commission;
  • a well-located UK Visa Application Centre, with car parking (which is no longer available at the High Commission) and excellent public transport links;
  • personalised service, with comfortable seating and counter arrangements that can accommodate a large number of customers;
  • all the necessary services available on-site, including banking, photocopying and food outlets nearby;
  • the customer's ability to track the progress of their application online or by telephone;
  • faster handling of telephone enquiries;
  • the forwarding of applications to and from the High Commission by special courier, thereby guaranteeing secure transmission of passports and other personal documents
5. From Friday 16 July 2004, the British High Commission will no longer accept visa applications submitted direct to them.
6. The use of the word "visa" above is for explanatory reasons only. It does not signify a change in the fact that the UK does not have a visa regime for Malaysian nationals. Malaysians going to visit the UK for less than six months still do not need a visa, but those going to the UK for more than six months need to apply for a UK Residence Permit before they travel, as at present.
